What exactly is Direct Sales?
If you are active on Social Media, mainly Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest, you most likely have heard the words ‘Direct Sales’ floating around. And you are also probably asking the question, “What is Direct Sales?” In the simplest explanation – Direct Sales is conducted outside of a standard brick-and-mortar retail location. Direct Sales companies and products are not typically available in brick-and-mortar businesses or even through a larger more general website. This means that if you want to purchase that AMAZING new mascara that you hear a buzz about, you will need to get in contact with an Independent Rep for the company that sells that brand of mascara. Methods of Direct Selling
Single level Direct Sales – Typically, sales are done in more of a one-on-one environment, like an in-home demonstration, or via a catalog or internet order through an Independent Representative of xyz company. The income usually is paid via sales commission through the parent company.
The Direct Sales Independent Rep may purchase directly from the company at a wholesale cost and then sell to their customers at a retail price in a one-on-one environment or online social selling environment directly to customers. The difference in cost between the wholesale and retail is how the income for the seller is calculated.
Party Plan: Party Plan is typically done in a group setting where guests are invited by a Hostess either to their home or even online in a social media setting that is closed off just to their group of invitees. In this method, it is very similar to Single level Direct Sales in which the Independent Rep does a demonstration and/or presentation of the products and/or service that may be available for purchase. There is usually some sort of Hostess perk, discount, or prizes which encourages the Hostess to invite friends that are most likely to purchase during the party. The income usually is paid via sales commission through the parent company.
Multi-level Marketing (MLM): Quite a few people often think that Direct Sales and Multi-Level Marketing are one and the same. However, while MLM is Direct Sales, not all Direct Sales are MLM. The biggest difference is with recruiting. In a Multi-Level Marketing scenario, Independent reps are allowed and often encouraged to recruit new sellers to join their team and teach them the business so they can sell and recruit new sellers to join their team and so on. Independent reps will then earn a commission from personal sales and also have the opportunity to earn a commission based on their recruits sales efforts. The team commissions vary from company to company as far as how far down the team genealogy the person is from the original recruiter. Single-Level Direct Sales is not based on creating a team and earning a commission based on team sales.
Why purchase from a Direct Sales Independent Representative?
There are a few great reasons!
- There are products and services that are most likely not available in a brick and mortar retail location.
- Similar products that are found retail typically cost more or are of a lower quality than what is available through Direct Sales.
- You get more of a one-on-one environment and are treated like a person, not a paycheck.
- You will have direct communication with your sales representative in case of education about the product or how to reorder the same product. Your rep should also be able to figure out trends in the market as well as your personal trends and be able to suggest products to you.
- When purchasing from Direct Sales, you are supporting a small business and you know that your money is going to that person. Rather than purchasing from a large chain store and having no idea who your money may or may not help.
- Most Direct Sellers love the company and product(s) they represent and have a true passion for it! Whereas in a brick and mortar employee only looks at it as a job and they watch the clock for when it’s time to leave.
I LOVE Direct Sales!
Direct Sales ‘KITnapper’
I’m what people in the Direct Sales ‘world’ call a ‘serial KITnapper’ or ‘Discount Diva’. A ‘serial KITnapper’ is basically someone who joins a company and buys the Starter Kit in order to get the value of products from the Kit and also be eligible to receive the discount that comes with being an Independent Rep. I will sometimes find that after ‘KITnapping’, that I really like the company for a variety of reasons and will then become active and not just for the discount.
Direct Sellers Support Each Other
There are hundreds upon hundreds of Direct Sales companies out there. That means there are thousands upon thousands of Direct Sellers between all of those companies. Direct Sellers will often find themselves in some sort of support community or learning community like The Socialite Suite. That is where I have personally met a ton of like-minded people and also life-long friends ♥. When you are in Direct Sales, you tend to support your brothers and sisters that are also in Direct Sales. When I see or hear about something that a company is releasing, I immediately check with one of my friends that are with that particular company. I’d much rather support a friend than place an order with some rando that won’t care to check on how I like the product and if it’s working well for me. If I cannot find someone I know that is with a certain company, I go to the place I trust to search – Sassy Direct – which is run by The Socialite Suite and has reps from hundreds of different Direct Sales companies, small businesses, service related businesses, and crafter/creators with an online storefront presence.
If you are in Direct Sales and would like to join a Premium training group that is geared towards Direct Sellers and small business owners, you should check out Sassy Pants. Every month is a new topic that is related to Social Marketing/Selling and how to do things the ‘non-spam’ way. It’s a no-commitment, subscription-based service and let me tell ya, it has seriously changed how I look at and run my business.
My Direct Sales
I have been in and out of Direct Sales for eons and wow have things changed! I love the freedom of being a business owner and of having Direct Sales products by reputable companies as my ‘supplier’ for lack of better words. Here is a list of companies that I am currently involved with. The first 2 listed are my main ‘gigs’ while the others fall into the ‘KITnapper’ category. ♥

Thirty-One Gifts – Consultant – Have you seen their amazing totes, storage bins, and purses that can all be customized? WOW
NuSkin – I’m addicted to the PowerLips Fluid such a game changer for silky, long lasting, lip color. The skin care and body care is unbelievable!
