Why would you want a purse/backpack/bag for your wheelchair?
Every #WheelchairUser finds times when they will wish they had an extra bag/backpack/purse to be able to carry or stow away items in. Sometimes, even a small pouch that attaches to one of the armrests on your wheelchair can be very helpful. The perfect small bag can be used to hold frequently used items like your cell phone, wallet, or medications. It can be quite useful to have a medium sized wheelchair backpack that can hold a water bottle, makeup, and even your iPad or Tablet. I love having a larger bag for those times that I’ll be in my chair and out n about for longer. They are uber perfect to hold pretty much anything and also have room to store purchases in, way more comfortable than having bags hanging on your handles. If you are wondering how to find the perfect purse, backpack, or bag for your wheelchair then read on!
What bag or bags are recommended?
If you read my article, 3 MUST HAVE Wheelchair Accessories, you’ll see 2 of my favorite bags that I personally use quite often. I’m also going to share a couple others with you in this article. Let’s go in order from smallest to largest.
Small – Wheelchair Arm Pouch or Walker Bar Pouch
This pouch can come in pretty handy and is perfect for smaller items like cell phone, glasses, small wallet, etc. The Pembrook Wheelchair Side Bag features 5 pockets, measures 12.5 x 7 inches, and is water-resistant – making it a great bag to hold the items that you need quick and easy access to. The only ‘con’ for me personally is that it is just a tad too long for my wheelchair so it either rubs against the wheel when placed on the outside or it bunches up when placed on the inside. Otherwise, it’s a pretty handy pouch/bag.
Medium – Wheelchair Backpack options
A medium sized wheelchair backpack or purse is a daily necessity for me. I don’t leave home without mine because that’s what I put my everyday items in; cell phone, wallet, medications, business cards, etc. I’ve tried several different types of purses and backpacks until I found my 2 favorites and I have a 3rd one ordered that I think will work quite well for different situations.
My current daily one is this awesome UTO Backpack Purse with a detachable shoulder bag. It holds everything I need and if I don’t want to have the entire backpack with me, I can use the detachable bag to carry my phone, mini wallet, and medicine case! I love that the backpack straps can hook on the handles of my chair to free up my lap and arms.
Another one that I use quite often is the Sling Backpack from Thirty-One Gifts. It’s a great size and super cute, I like to use this as a wheelchair backpack for when I need something lightweight but roomie for when I’m out of the house for more than a few hours.
Another one that I just ordered but have not tried out yet is the Lil Go Backpack from Thirty-One Gifts. It looks like it’s about the same size as my Backpack Purse but a bit more durable and also customizable.
Large – Wheelchair Bag
This is the big kahuna and absolutely perfect for when you need or want a larger bag to carry things in. I love love this bag when I’m traveling or when I go to an event like E3 or ComicCon. It’s perfect to hold ALL.THE.THINGS! I also love that the outside pockets are large enough and sturdy enough to hold a couple water bottles. It’s easy enough to remove from the chair for when you need to fold your wheelchair. I am amazed at how much stuff this Wheelchair backpack/bag can hold!
