3 MUST HAVE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSORIES
You are probably aware of that over-used idiom, “It doesn’t hurt to try”, right? Wrong! hahaha! What if you decide to try and then you don’t have that thing anymore and it hurts your soul! 😭 Ok, maybe it isn’t THAT bad since I’m talking about wheelchair accessories. Lemme tell ya, once I got used to these 3 Must-Have Wheelchair Accessories, it really sucks to be caught without any of them. And once you start using any or all of these, y’all will come running and yelling, “Thank you, Carol!!!” (ahem, that’s me 😉) There are plenty of decorative and fashionable wheelchair accessories out there but we are going to talk functional for now.
Let me preface this by letting ya know a lil about my wheelchair. When I first became a wheelchair user, we thought it was going to be temporary. So, we purchased this guy since it was affordable, lightweight, foldable, and had pretty high reviews. There were a few things that I noticed right away that I knew I would need to add to ‘lil Blue’ (that’s what I just now decided to call my wheelchair haha). Now that I have my custom-to-me wheelchair on the way, I know I’ll definitely still want to use these 3 Must-Have Wheelchair Accessories.
#1 A DECENT AND ROOMIE BAG
When it comes to wheelchair accessories, the first on the list is definitely a good bag/backpack/purse to use as a removable storage device. Sure, ‘lil Blue’ has a pouch on the back that has velcro closures, but honestly, it does not hold much. AND if you end up putting anything in that pouch that is not flat, you can feel it push against your back. Not exactly ideal, amirite? I’ve tried a few different bags and these are my 2 favorites. You can find out why and when I use these bags (here)
Holy Canolli! I have gone through THREE cup holders because they are seriously so well loved and used haha! Y’all might be like, wait, what? A cup holder for a wheelchair? Ummm, yeah! Especially for a manual chair when you’d like to roll and have your drink with you. I searched several sites to find useful wheelchair accessories and found these lovely gems! It’s incredibly useful and handy to have a cupholder, the few times that I have been without my cupholder, it’s been missed. The foldable cup holder is the most versatile as it can be adjusted to hold many different cup sizes and will even hold a coffee mug! The removable cup cozy in this one is nice to keep drinks cold and is removable to allow room for larger cups.
When you are sitting in your chair, whether it’s an office chair, the seat in your car, or in your wheelchair – you’re bound to get some discomfort. I personally have a great deal of pain when I’m sitting, especially if I do not have my ‘Tush Cush’ with me. The proper cushion is going to vary from person to person. I require a ‘Coccyx Cushion’ because I still have quite a bit of pain from what we lovingly refer to as my ‘area formerly known as tailbone’ (I had a coccygectomy in 2014). This is my current cushion and I love it! I’ve had this one for over 7 months and it has held its shape and is still as comfy as Day 1.
